The Project

The Tunnel and Station Civil Works contract for the Sydney Metro Coty to Southwest (Stage 2) project which has been awarded to the CPB Contractors–Ghella–John Holland JV. The project forms part of TfNSW´s Sydney Metro system extending the metro 30km from Chatswood to Bankstown. The Chatswood to Sydenham component of this project includeds the construction of 15.5 km twin TBM bored running tunnels from Chatswood, beneath Sydney Harbour, through Sydney’s CBD to Marrickville including new underground stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo along with new underground platforms at Central Station.

Sydney Metro City & Southwest will deliver 30km of new metro rail between Chatswood
and Bankstown. Sydney’s new metro railway will have a target capacity of about 40,000 customers per hour, similar to other metro systems worldwide. Sydney’s current suburban system can reliably carry 24,000 people an hour per line.

Key Aspects of the Project

  • Twin 15.5 kilometre tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham travelling under Sydney Harbour and the CBD using five tunnel boring machines (TBMs).
  • 57 cross passages approximately every 240 metres between the tunnels and a temporary access shaft at Blues Point.
  • Tunnel dive structures at Chatswood and Marrickville.
  • Excavation of six new underground metro stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo.
  • A crossover cavern at Barangaroo to allow trains to cross from one track to another.
  • Demolition and removal of existing buildings on the construction sites.
  • First tunnel boring machine will be in the ground by the end of 2018
  • Four double-shield, hard rock, gripper type tunnel boring machines and one slurry machine for tunnelling under Sydney Harbour will be used.
